Once the season was complete attention first turned to drainage works on the line. Some of you may recall that ahead of Christmas 2012 many areas of the line were flooded due excessive rainfall, and services had to be postponed, so we sought civil engineering advice regarding the formation of the line through the glen. We discovered that the area known as “Blue Lagoon” at the bottom of the hill climb, despite having had a large drainage pit installed in the 1980s, was unable to handle large volumes of storm water and unless the situation was improved it could flood again or worse wash away a section of the railway line. Over the period of two months, the drainage pit was enlarged and new run off drains were installed under the line and down the side of the valley to ensure the water didn’t erode the embankment below the line.
